how much is normal?
Ok....I have been running my '97 road king for 3 months now. Put 5000 miles on it commuting 45 miles a day and just riding with the wife on the weekends. Got 57,000 miles on it and it runs like new!
I know all about oil in the air cleaner problems, and have read a ton of posts on here. I get it....it's common. I get it....it is usually a weak spring or a badly seating ball in the oil pump return valve.
It just bugs me....everything else is perfect on the bike. I am not talking a lot here.....a few splaters of oil on the exhaust manifold once or twice a week. It just BUGS me....did I say that already?
SOOOOOO....what is "normal". HOW MUCH oil becomes too much, and am I freaking over nothing? I guess I just want someone to day what AMOUNT coming out is excessive.

"Normal" tough question on this board. On my 92 I just figure it is routine maintenance to wipe the cleaner. If you are running at higher rpm's there will be more than just putting around due to blowby. It is just the nature of the EVO.

If I don't keep the oil level down about a 1/2" or so on the stick, mine will blow out a little, but I do have a hose from the heads to underneath the bike frame. As long as I keep the oil level down it doesn't blow out any. I am running drag pipes since Spanners says that makes a difference. I did not know that. I learn something new from you guys every time I get on here. I'm also running a K&N air cleaner.

Hey Spanners, I am running lollipops and they do help with low end torque. I learned that on here also.

Run the hose to the ground and quit worrying about, it is a bad design for anything to eat it's own puke. Alternatives are: stick a kotex in the bottom of the air cleaner and change it once a month, buy the expensive oil catcher can and drain it.
Your going to hear the exposed hose will pull in dirt or moisture, that engine huffs enough to blow the crap out before it can pull all the way to the heads. Few choices but I know what I've been running for the last 7 years and offends the treehuggers.
PS: If you run synthetic oil, you will have to use the extra absorbant maxi-pads, Syn3 is too slick for normal pads
