Default Fuel filter craziness

I have decided to change the fuel filter on my new to me 97 Road King EFI. I know I should also change the gasket on the top of the tank, and I'm also going to replace the in tank fuel lines while I'm at it. I called my local dealer today to get prices on the parts and I was shocked to find out that the filter alone is $135!

With all due respect to the purists out there, I don't feel that everything needs to be a genuine MoCo part and I know I can get a Drag Specialties filter from the online retailers for about $40.

Has anyone out there had experience with the Drag Specialties filter? I'm not against paying more if I'm getting more (performance, lifespan etc) but I have a hard time believing the Harley part is truly worth more than 3 times the price of the aftermarket option.

Whichever filter I end up with . . . . is there anything else I should be doing while I have the tank opened up, or anything I need to watch out for? Thanks in advance.

I would go with the DS one....their stuff is usually pretty good but I would give the filter an eyeball first and see if its actually dirty enough to warrant changing it at all.

I think this is a good idea too, I have read a lot in the Softail forum that the gas, I am not sure if there is a difference in our neighbor to the north, is terrible on the hoses. It can also cause a problem in the tank as well. I am relatively new to motorcycles as I have only owned two older carb'd bikes.

You also have to replace all of the bolts on top of the tank. They have sealing rings on them.

Ronnies HD lists that part at $97.99 - a lot, but not $135! What is the service interval for replacing that filter? At that price I would expect a very long time!
