Default 1-3/4" or 2" drag pipes

I have 1-3/4" drag pipes on my 99 Softail Custom, but was wondering if 2" might sound better. Any of you tried both? Which ones sound the best?

In my opinion, neither. I feel drag pipes sound like crap and I know they rob performance.

What sound are you going for? The 2" are going to be a lot louder, in my experience over the decades. I would go with the 1.75" personally, but if you want that super-ear-splitting noise, the "Ticket me now, Please..." effect, then get the 2".

with the 2" you are going to lose more power than 1-3/4 stick some chrome werks baffles in them pipes and you will have drag pipe sound but will run a lot better .they are same baffles that are in older pythin pipes ar2 s .work very well with drags .thanks pete

Not really sure. My 1-3/4" drags sound really good but I don't remember ever hearing 2" drags. I do have lollipops in mine and it runs really good from low revs to wide open. My motor is stock except for the pipes and air cleaner. I do know that changing to 2" might hurt performance some, but it runs so well I could loose a little without hurting it much. Just thought some of you could tell me the difference in sound. I would imagine they would be a little deeper tone with the larger pipes but had not thought about them being louder too. Mine with the lollipops are really not that loud although I am 73 years old and hearing is not all that great. They sure sound pretty at 80 on the interstate.

1 3/4' are better, and you can get a good power bump in low and mid range with some Thunder Torque Inserts.

AND they will lower to tone to, what most consider, a better growl.

Thanks RHillbilly; That is what I was looking for. Someone who had had both. I may have to try a set of 2" just to see. They are not that expensive, and I would probably keep my 1-3/4" around so I could always go back. I do like to change exhausts once in a while just for the change. Back in the 50's I went from long flex pipes to short stub pipes like the board track racers used on my old "45" flat head. Those sounded really neat at the time.

This. I went with these thunder torque inserts on my 1 3/4's and they were the ticket.
