TD your moved to the front of the class. Darn good idea dog man.. THANKS
I do have a pressure washer.
The new tank is humble compared to this old paint..
Dog man? WHY YOU !@@@^&*^*#&$@#%$ How did you know I look like a DOG?
No harsh chemicals involved. Dump right out of the filler holes......
I wish I had done that in addition to the acid bath. The instructions said to throw a cup of small stones and shake it up to knock all the rust loose. I didn't do that. My work is still holding, but it's a ticking bomb. I just hope it doesn't blow while I'm still riding it....after I'm dead would be ok.

I dont think you will have problems with large pieces letting go, they wont get pass the filter, but ethenol gas can disolve the kreem and gum up the carb.
Humble image? Ba Humbug.........show off......... ;')
BTW, when my son and I rejuvenated a 1975 Honda CB 125, one of us held the tank while the other stuck a pressure washer in and very carefully BLASTED the inside with WATER until junk stopped coming out......Worked like a charm.

I can see getting a bunch off the sides and the bottom but I don't see that working on the top of the tank.
You might want to start with TD's method then go to the acid for a more complete cleaning.
I like the old tanks compared to the new ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!
