Default Had to throw in the towel

A while back, I asked for help with my EVO popping/backfiring under load on my '98 Electra Glide Classic.

You all gave me some great advice, and I appreciate it.

I got very good at pulling and installing the carb. Pulled it apart, cleaned it, checked everything. Put it back on, no change.

Fought the intake manifold bolts for many sessions until I finally won. Replaced the seals. Replaced the fuel hose. Had someone else look at the carb and mess with it (shortened the stroke on the accelerator pump, and smoothed out the slide). Made things even worse.

I keep my bike at a buddy's house and it is an unheated garage. We have had one of our coldest winters since 1977 with snow and ice leading the way. When it does get dry, there are clouds of salt roaming the roadways. To top that off, I work for a heating oil/HVAC company so lots of overtime, add in a part time job, and moving a family member AGAIN, and there is just no time for me to try and figure it out. (okay...enough complaining)

Today, I just had to throw in the towel. Got off at Noon, went and grabbed the bike, suited up for the 31 degree ride, and took it to my local indy. Sorry to let you guys down, I really wanted to figure it out, but now, I just want it right when I finally get some weather and time that cooperates.

I worked out a good deal for a set of new Michelin Commander II's while its there.

Looking forward to changing the oil in all three holes when I get it back, but the running problem just beat me. Guess it could be a weak coil, bad wires, timing off, I dunno. All I know is I ain't good enough (yet) to fix it, and ain't gonna' have time to figure it out, and can't afford to throw parts at it.

Thanks for letting me ramble.

I'll let you know what it was/is.

Keep us informed on the fix. I think my brother-in-laws 98 has that shitty EFI.

Just stumbled on your thread. There is a saying in my family that goes like this... "if it ain't quite broke, f..k with it til it is". Nothing wrong with throwing in
the towel; same reason you get called to fix problems with heating oil/HVAC.

We only knew it all, when we were teenagers.

The only thing I could think of it being is the VOES.
Hope your Indy finds it cheaply.

Never be afraid to admit defeat...if you know you are defeated.

In the auto repair world there is a reason driveability problems require the better technicians and can have some of the highest repair bills, they are a BITCH to resolve sometimes!

Good call taking it to a professional, and hopefully they can get it straightened out for you in short order!

I am in the same boat as you. 2009 fxdc starting to cough and backfire, it just started for no reason I can find yet. Has 26500mi and all maint was done by Harley until 20000mi. I ride 60mi a day for work and have had to take the truck for fear of breaking down on the road during workweek. Am getting frustrated also after doing the basic checks. Wish the manual had better troubleshooting section.
