Bike stumbling, missing, backfiring until warmed up... HELP
Started doing this just recently for the 1st couple minutes on the road every time I stop, shut it down for more than an hour and start again. Runs great after it gets going with no issues.
I do let it idle a while before I go too and it doesn't help. I checked for intake leaks and it's very tight, no leaks. I am stumped.
Anybody know what could be the cause and help me to fix please?
Mine did this a few months back....everything checked out okay. Then it stopped doing it, been good ever since, I put it down to either crap in the carb. or a bad tank of gas.
I can't tell you how to fix your problem but when I first got my bike she was doing the same thing.
I had the carb rebuilt by a local indy (they fixed many problems) and it got better but was still doing it (just not as much).
I got an S&S Super E with intake and haven't had a problem since.
Mine did that when I first bought it. Would've sworn it was carb/intake problem.
But the starter was cranking slow so I put a new battery in it and hey presto the coughing and spluttering went away.
I had to put a new regulator on it a few months later, so that may have been the root cause of it all.
Well I have been warming it up more than usual with the enricher on since the rebuild thinking that I don't want to blow out a base gasket as recommended.
I am thinking that idling that long with the enricher wide open may have been fouling the plugs. When riding to and from work today I kept the enricher on only for like 1 minute (instead of over 5 minutes) then revved the motor up to about 4,000 rpm a few times before taking off.
It didn't backfire, stumble, or surge this time. Related? Could I have been fouling plugs with the enricher on for so long? It wasn't giving any indication while idling that it was missing or backfiring, but I did smell a rich burning exhaust fume for sure.
How long should I leave the enricher on? New to the CV carb, since it is a recent upgrade.
I use the choke to start the bike then like a minute later (if that long) I close the choke and use the throttle lock to set the bike to about 1500 rpms to finish warming up.
It sounds like you were fouling your plugs. 5 or more minutes is way to long in my opinion.
Yeah, you're fouling. I leave the enrichener on long enough to put on my gloves, then throttle lock it until it will idle and the rocker boxes are warm.
