Finally got it on the road and took it for an hour ride. Runs ok thought rpms and smooth under acceleration. When I'm at or below 2k it's not smooth and when I'm off the throttle coasting in gear or down shifting it vibrates like hell. If I pull in the clutch and coast to a stop with or without brakes it's smooth. There's some jiggle over bumps but the roads are pretty bad right now. I've read that it could be motor mounts or a tight belt. I did take a look at the chain and it looked ok. I drained all three, the trans looked very clean, the engine oil looked terrible and some moisture and the clutch side looked rough definitely had some water or moisture in there.
Any obvious things I should check here? Finally riding season and now I have issues I didn't know I had.
at 30,000 we swap all the motor mounts and heim joints out on dynas is saves all the crazyness that goes on with them and the spongie mounts make the engine moves so much we have seen the swing arm front crash into the starter housing --
Do you recommend just reading the harley service manual or is there a good way to check if one of the mounts is shot? I did check the front bolts to make sure they were tight. One was not as tight as the others but I wouldn't say loose.
Haven't heard of that, I'll look into it thanks. I did the shim and trim after reading every post I can find on it. It was touching the engine with no clearance. Now there's a good 1/4" clearance. Hopefully it will help until I can get a new mount in.

this is a city bike not an open road one -- jz
My Dyna did the exact same thing you describe. Replaced front and rear motor mounts and problem solved. Still have to replace the heim below the tank/above the cylinders.
Anyone have a suggestion on where to get the heim joints besides moco?
Anyways, check your manual on how to set the heim joint.
Also, when changing oil, try to keep the oil from dripping on the front motor mount. It helps rot the rubber out faster.
I use a 2 liter soda bottle cut in half lengthwise. It fits perfectly and keeps the oil off the engine and mount.
