Default Electrical Question and hub notchin'

Hey team,

Been putting some miles on the new-to-me springer front end and am liking it mostly except for the highway as the solid mount Softail and the solid bushings on the dog bone risers. It is pretty numbing to say the least.

I also like speedometers and odometers for some reason, maybe it's just for posterity but whatever.

Gotta a few questions to bounce off ya:

If I go to poly or rubber bushings do I have to use that ugly ground-strap? I re-did more than 50% of the wiring so I hope I'm up to the challenge but just need the appropriate direction. I ran the headlight to the frame and not the forks. The directionals are on the forks however and of course the controls are on the handlebars. And yes GB, earths are what I meant to type... Lol
Any alternatives to the ground strap?

I wanna use the speedo/odometer on my 1995 flstc but the springer is from a 1996+. What does notching the hub of the wheel entail? What do I NOT want to do? For safety's sake of course.

Thanks,?
Tom

Tom to use a speedo drive gear on a wheel not set up for it you just have to drill a hole for the speedo drive gear tab to ride in.

As simple as that?!?! I actually thought so but it just seemed too easy. As long add I don't go too deep then the safety factor should not be compromised. I hope!

You drill the hole in the brake rotor if using a stock speedo drive.

Your indicators etc will usually earth through to the frame (via steering head bearings) unless they are rubber mounted but you can run the earth wires back to the headlight and mate with the earth you made for the headlight.

Tom, you only need a ground (what am I writing?!) wire to suit the power consumption of the electrics/lights mounted on the forks. Not only do you have the steering head bearings, which are not the most reliable earth, but also the bushings in your springer forks, of which the same could be said. A ground strap sounds an ugly way of dealing with the need for a two-way electrical connection, it can all be done within the normal wiring and harness.

I think you are going to have to "shoemake" it, that is fit the drive unit to the wheel, see where the little tab is going to be and either drill or use something like a dremel tool to knotch the wheel.

On a standard softail the knotch is in the rotor on the left but the springer softail has the rotor on the right (wrong for you) side ....

That is correct Doug, right-side caliper and rotor. I will measure a sharp drill bit to the tang on the drive. I have my old setup still so I gotta measure the width of the current spacer and compare it to the side of the drive. It will be close as I merely eyeballed it last weekend.

Thanks Spanners and Graham. What I will do is add some black rubber bushings and see what (if anything) happens to the controls and blinkers. If I have to tie into the headlight ground then no big deal.

Will report back.

GB+ Spanners, you're both right the indicators remain the same. They both work when the turn signals are depressed. Like I said the headlight ground (sorry Graham) was run to the frame when I redid r the controls. The handlebars and controls were unaffected either, so far anyway. Well let me tell you about the rubber bushings= much better. I like the solid brass ones but on the highway it was pure rubbish as that rigid mounted engine was very very unforgiving at speed.

Next up well be to liberate the Dremel from work for the night and then make a notch for the Speedo tab to rest in.

Thanks.
