what weight oil are you running ? also one of two things can cause the mix of gas & oil , bad pet **** & or bad head gasket , if the float is stuck it will only leak whats in the bowl unless you don't shut off your pet **** , I do no matter what ,if I shut the key off I turn the gas off , I don't run the vacume style , just a HD non vacume one
Head gasket is fine... I haven't run a compression test but the thing runs like a scalded dog... no loss of compression for sure. As far as shutting the petcock off, I always shut it off. Oil weight is 15w-40, but it regardless of viscosity, there is gas in there... even when cold it runs off the dipstick like a fluid. Float wasn't stuck, and the overflow on the bowl wasn't clogged... leaves me with only one conclusion, someone put it there. Another thing is the bike is a daily rider... the gas can't sit in those jugs long enough to get that much gas in the oil. If someone didn't sabotage it I'd be awfully surprised.
I ask about the oil cause you said it run thin now I know why , as for gas hope you don't have any enemys that would do that , I run 20-50 year round here , no oil cooler yet , when she goes back together she'll have one
Back to your gas trouble if it getting gas in oil that's all it could be from all I have learned over the years , sm is out in the shop or I would look it up TJ should have my # if ya wanna call tomorrow
The oil is running thin because there is gas in it... you pop the dipstick and the gas/oil mix goes way up it, so someone poured at least 1/4-1/2 a pint of gasoline in the oil tank... that's why I said there is no possible explanation now that I have gone through everything, for there to be a mechanical way for that much gas to get in there. It'd have to sit for days to seep past the rings to do that, and the bike just doesn't sit that long. The oil level was fine when I left for class that afternoon.
I know some preach about 20w-50 up to 60wt, and some say 20w-50 is too thin, but I never have lifter noise, and I have never seen the oil light flicker with 15w-40 Rotella T. It's a heavy duty diesel oil, so in theory it should work better than most of what's on the market. I hear a 40wt. diesel oil is usually about a 50wt. MC oil anyways. I do have an oil cooler.
I'd plunk down some serious coin on it NOT being someone putting fuel in your oil... Hand full of dirt maybe but who carries gas around, in a small bottle or with a funnel to do that...Who would even think about putting gas in the oil to damage something and why did they not just fill it up instead of just adding a little...
I had a float issue that would only stick once every few weeks...
Make sure your petcock turns off, Test compression and leakdown, change the oil and ride....
Actually all you need to know now is, Has it happened again?
If not "one and done". Engine isn't damaged.
As far as who carries gasoline around with them, I do! I have gas cans for my lawn mowers, gas in my van/auto, even gas in my bike.
Here is one for you DougS: Flying offshore we keep jet fuel on some of the platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Boat crews have been known to empty the fuel transporters into their fuel tanks(Jet fuel is #2diesel) or trade for shrimp and fill the transporters with salt water so the crane operators couldn't tell the transporter had been emptied. By the time we got around to transferring the fuel(now water) into the main tank the boat was long gone. And you couldn't pin it on anyone boat crew. Fortunately we had "No-Go" filters that would shut down the fuel on the main tank if they sensed water.
This is the first time I've ever had this happen to me on this bike, and again... even if the float was stuck, the overflow on the CV carb wasn't clogged... I would have seen gas on the ground. Also, the bike gets ridden everyday... that gas can't sit in those jugs long enough for that much to get in there. As soon as I fire the bike up it'd choke up and foul the plugs, or at least not run on the first go... none of that happened. I just can't see how this wasn't sabotage the more I think about it.
Not sure what this has to do with this guy's oil being messed with but I know what Jet B Fuel is and have been around aviation most of my life... We stopped AV fuel from being swiped by filling a tank with A-1 and bunch of guys siphoned it into their cars...LOL...That stopped it....

I guess you didn't see my first post on this. this happen to a lot of bikes. and it happens to mine a lot especially after getting home from the bar and forgetting to shut it off. and when it does happen it never starts hard or fouls plugs and it doesn't leak out the overflow its a very slow leak. when the bike is on the side stand the fuel creeps up the main jet. down the intake into the cylinders and past the rings. when you start the bike it pumps it into the oil tank the most ive seen in mine was about a quart from sitting over night.
anyways there's nothing to worry about change your oil and keep an eye on your level and just ride it. if it happens again get a new petcock

10-4. I see what you're saying but I just can't see it happening? Unless that petcock stuck open even when it was off. It's odd for sure! Good to know that the bike is fine though. I hate riding with a half helmet but I'm going to ride with one for a while to see if that squealing noise is weird wind getting into my full face helmet when I take off. It's 4 years old now and time for a new one..
Going to replace the petcock anyways to be safe, and will be getting in touch with campus police to see what they have to say. You never know. If it was sabotage I'm going to be super duper pissed off.
