Ok my helecopter sounding engine friends, sarcasm added into this statement is your taking a chance on getting passed by a commercial riding mower when a Harley is in stock form.
Why a Evo, personally like to steer away from the majority crowd and when entering a crowd I want to be different. Enjoy the challenge of improving a older bike into being superior over a new bike, convinced I achieved this but at what price, it doesn't matter.
Evo engines respond well to mods, basic technology that is solid, battle tested and firing up a Evo in a sea of TC's is just refreshing to what I stand for. Listen to pack of TC's idle in traffic, you are looking for the rest of the helecopter, listen to a pack of Shovels and Evo's it pours Harley soul into the air. Don't get me wrong, ride with Pan's, Shovel's, Evo's, TC's may make fun of the rider on the bike but refrain from looking down on the bike unless it is a Goldwing and then can usually spot the rider holding a ice cream cone.
Stereotyping Evo owners and carbs into the "lost in the dinosaur age" is far from the truth, I make my living running a large truck repair dealership that everyday repairs include technology, highly evolved diagnostic reader systems, multiple data link and CAN complex computer systems so a modern Twinkie doesn't scare me, just prefer to stay within my view of the last Harley engine that represents the legend and that is a Evo.
You're like me, difference is i feel that way about cars. sure the computer garbage can be cool, but i took all that crap out of my mustang and went back to carb. i've been slaying those fuel injected computer programming monkeys for years. back when you tuned a car with a screwdriver and a bad attitude.
I just like a bike I can fiddle with in my garage without having to buy a bunch of electronic stuff and learning to use it. I could, worked on aircraft wiring and various electric bits and pieces for several years, just don't want to, like to be lazy in my old age. Only thing I like better than an EVO is an S&S EVO. Moves down the road a bit quicker...
Truth be told, I don't always fiddle with it in the garage, gets cold out there in winter. Last winter I brought it in the living room... which I was fiddling with, too.

That's another thing, carbs I'm friends with, FI is a foreign language to me. Carbs can get cranky on a trip, but they usually don't just say, "Ok, I'm done, we're stopping here" like FI can and does occasionally do to folks.
I wish. Hind sight I shoulda bought an evo. I was new to HD and bought a bran new 07 thinking it would be better than anything previous. Boy was I wrong. Nothing but a $$$ pit. Hopefully this new S&S 124" will last longer than the stocker. Ive replaced/repaired everything but the wire harness and front end.
The first Harley I looked at was an 07 Softail. God is good and I didn't want the payments not the repair bills. 2007 was a year of firsts especially with the Softail. The offset front wheel, the 96" the six speed tranny with the same final 1:1 as my Evo's five speed. First year 200mm? <-- I think that is true anyway.
That s&s is a nice piece of machinery, n o?

I thought the motors are the same thing. The counter balancer is the dopey mount in front of the shifter, left side of bike on the frame? Pistons are the same, the heads, the jugs. Right or wrong? Asking not arguing

These are the balancers wrapped around the crank. Everything else is the same except the sprocket on the crank and a drilled oil passage for the balancer tensioners.
