Hello,
What are the best mods for an early EVO FXR,from engine to brakes and suspension for the best bang/buck?
I need some info on my preferred mods and what the PROs and CONs are of the brands etc.
Preferred:
2-1 exhaust w muffler
CV V.S. MIKUNI- sea level florida riding which one better for more consistant torque/hp
Fork brace with fork re-spring/valve
Rear shock: FOX v.s. PROGRESSIVE etc.
If you do the cam, you'll have to do the carb too. Stock carb was total garbage. And the ignition module in 85 left a lot on the table. Cam was pretty mild, too, but that carb has to go. A lot of people like the CV's. Mikuni makes a good carb too. I like my S&S because I can fiddle with it and I understand it. CV's are worked out today as to how to get them right. When I went with the S&S, they weren't yet.
No matter what it looks like, pull the swingarm, clean it real good, and check for cracks. If it is cracked, there are pivot kits that let you use a newer, stronger swing arm. Hopefully someone used antiseize or grease on the pivot bolt previously so you won't need to pound it out with a sledgehammer or cut it. If it still has original, I wouldn't be surprised if the engine mounts and those big rubber doughnuts the swingarm pivot goes through (also is the rear engine mount) are past their useful life. As far as mods, there are aftermarket engine mounts and pivot bushings/bearings (to replace the cleve blocks) that get good reviews. I'm replacing all the swingarm pivot parts on my 89 including the bolt; it's too corroded to reuse, haven't decided which system to go with yet. My 89 is about down to the frame, going to rebuild my front end, too. More fixing than modding, though.
Imold hit-on a good point. I had an 85 with a good many miles on it that had sat-up for a while. I had to pretty-much beat my swing arm thru-bolt out and everything in there was a rusted corroded mess. Sta-Bo bushings are a good replacement choice IMHO and it will stiffen the bike up too. Be very carful when all that goes back together. I sold that bike to somebody I knew and he sold it to somebody he knew shortly thereafter. I kept seeing it show up at the local dealership due to broken belts, so I must have had it a little out of alignment. The Sta-Bo bushings will be much better and easier to align than cleave-blocks and spacers and it will handle a whole lot better.
EV3 cam or a 300 cam
CV carb is fine but you may need bigger jets (I run one on my 100+ HP FXR and it's perfect)
Any pipes except shotguns will do.... I ran Supertrapp 2:2 stainless and loved the deep rumble sound. Great performance too.
Sporty 1200 rear shocks
Fork brace works nice but I found a clunk in the front end with one so removed it
Steering Dampner is a cheap and easy fit - stability on high speed turns is awesome
Ultima make a good reliable nosecone ignition unit (it's a rebadged Dyna2ki)
Stock 35mm forks are fine, but the single pot calliper is less than optimal. If you have alloy rims then you can upgrade to 4 or 6 pot units!
