I was thinking of using my RUGER Mini-14 padlock to send a message. What do you use to stop bike thieves?
Own Pans, Shovels and Evos. Unless you know how to kick a couple of these you are S.O.L. That being said if I am on the road I lock the forks, ignition and throw another chain lock on the bike. I also only sleep at places where I am on the ground floor and my bike is outside the front door.

Other than that ... that is what insurance is for. Do you really think someone gives a 7hit about your semi-auto padlock. Doesn't send a message because if you are gonna take it, you are not looking at the padlock maker and thinking "OMG the owner is a badazz..we can't steal this one", you are cutting the lock, hefting it on the back end of a truck/trailer (with your accomplice) and you are gone.

RUGER Mini-14 padlock. Okay so let me wrap my mind around this. You have a padlock on you rifle? Because? Do you really believe that if "Billy Bad Boy" breaks in your house with his homies, you are gonna have time to get your home defense weapon, unlock it, load it and hit your target(s) before one/all of them waste you?

Weapons safety revolves around your trigger finger not some government-mandated safety function that puts you at a distinct disadvantage.

Jockey...I was being sarcastic my friend. Like others have said, if they really want it, they'll get it. Good insurance and trying to keep it in a less vulnerable area is all you can do. You can throw a few hurdles their way, but ultimately the experienced thieves you can't stop.

I understand completely. All you can do is put something in place to slow them down.

I used to freak out about it, I work in a seedy part of town. I realize that you can't stop people from doing what they are going to do. I also have great insurance.

Insurance will never pay for all the 100s of hours I/you've stuck into my/your bike. That would be my biggest concern. Money, metal, you can pretty much always replace ... Time is gone forever.

Best to have a second 'disposable' bike for leaving around.

I always though a crappy bike cover with "Honda" written on it was the first line of protection?

Actually, what I need is some kind of scaffolding tube bolted through the bike, probably 6' wide, so they cannot get it out of the entrance of my yard! The rest of the time it's moving and I am sitting on it!

Yes, it's a constant worry. If I go away, it goes inside my house. Thankfully house thieves and bike thieves tend to be two different species.

I would think the bike being an Evo has nothing to do with dirtbags lifting bikes. If a thief sees an opportunity they will take it regardless. Most people see Harley on the tank and they've got no idea what your riding, new or old, what model, displacement, etc. They just know it looks great, sounds great, people love Harleys. Thieves know this and will it turn around and profit, plain & simple.

I don't know about you but insurance will never give me what I have in the bike so if it is stolen then I will loose a bunch of money.

Not something I am very caviler about.

I went to a locksmith to get the best cable/lock I could, one that would resist bolt cutters. The clerk said bolt cutters aren't used much anymore. Thieves buy a battery powered drill and a carbide disc that will cut through anything. I left empty handed.
