Default missing shifts (false neutral)

aimed more at the big bore guys here...although I think that really only pertains to me and bagger these days?

finally got most of the bugs worked out of my 124, everythings been mechanically perfect....going to get it on a dyno and really get the carb dialed in sometime in the next couple weeks....but having some issues with false neutrals when shifting WOT (still using the clutch)

I have a fair amount of "slop" at the shift arm on the inner primary (checked against similiar bikes of the era *1998 FLHRCI*, and they have about the same back and forth slop). the arm is not stripped at the splines, and the arm itself is SOLID on the bar going into the tranny, but again, just a good amount of wiggle before it feels like its engaged on the shift drum.

this is ONLY an issue shifting WOT (IE, WOT through 6k, go to grab 2nd, or 3rd or 4th, and instant redline (false neutral)....clutch in, back WAY off on the throttle, and itll get into the next gear)

if I shift @ 5k, and deliberately let off the throttle to unload the transmission completely, it'll shift no problem.

clutch (bandit sportsman) is adjusted properly, double checked that...but this problem is VERY repeatable. the shifter pawl was set about 3 months ago when the transmission was out of the bike (new trap door bearings while I had it all apart), so I know that's "zeroed".

is there a way to add a bit of bias towards the upshift via the pawl adjustment? or is a Baker shift drum / kit in my future?

this isnt an all out drag bike, but I WOULD like to be able to run it @ the local dragway....because I really believe i'll break into the 11's (and that S&S 11 Second Club patch is pretty sweet)

Can't help you here, I back off mine during shifts, afraid of breaking a expensive part that will be expensive to replace again. Small wallet gets bigger than my ***** in situations like this, besides a couple WOT gears and going fast enough to please me.

On one note that dam exhaust rattles your head after 6 hours, going to tone it down some, you still eyeballing taming it down?

hahahahaha

if nothing else you guys always cheer me up

everything's kosher if I back off on shifts, but what fun is that? (being said, the rare occasion it DOESNT miss on a WOT 1/2/3...the adrenaline rush is freaking amazing)

as for taming the exhaust....not sure its possible. been waiting to hear back from a UK based company about a new/different baffle material they're developing (Acousti-Fil). nifty idea, but at the time i contacted them, they weren't doing anything "small"....only large *IE 1000+ pieces* orders.

went for a stroll with Tee&Vee, and keeping ~20-30' behind him, barreling down the highway @ 75-80mph, he could still hear my bike over his.

for now, I've been going with earplugs and/or full face lol

Frank showed a picture of wrapping the baffle with single layer of heat wrap like you use on the outside to mellow out the sound, may work

I have the same problem with the softail it's the shifter paw spring is weak. when I was trying to shift at high revs the vibration from the bike caused the paw to bounce on the drum not getting a full shift I still haven't fixed it. now I just pull in the clutch let off the gas when the motor settles down I shift. ill fix it this winter might just put a baker in it.
