There are many efi mod. kits available but you need to get the motor running right before you get into all that.
Question ... you state you have " cleaned up intake ports and valves " .?
What did you do in regards to the valves ?
nothing, took them out, checked the spring pressure's, cleaned up all the carbon sediment from them and the head ports while taking a couple of very small casting ridges from the intake ports. they were not hogged out in any way.
-"but you need to get the motor running right before you get into all that."
you are probably close to the fact with that comment. the bike had been sitting for 3yrs till this spring and when i got it out it was running like crap and i figured corn gas in a steel tank was the problem. cleaned the fuel system and still crap. at that point i said truck it and made the decision to up-grade with the parts and add a commander. no commander available and it still runs like crap but a little more hop to it. still high revs on most start ups, stalling the odd time at idle, and runs rich on re-start for a short time.
-
in hindsight i jumped into this probably half assed backwards and in my mind a new ecm would fix the issues after cleaning the fuel system didn't work. i just gotta get back to basics with this and give more thought to how the efi system controls most things. my old cars with the carbs are much easier. be patient with me, we will work it out. rick

i have heard about this 2 or 3 times now. from what i here the 96 and the 95 are the same ecm. so, where do i get info on doing this. is it just a swap out or is it more intricate than that. i would like to do some reading on this before i jump into something again without doing some leg work. thanks; rick

Default welcome, drp drip

It sounds like to me that you might have injectors that are leaking down which is especially noted after a stall and then restarting with a rich condition. See if there's a way to test your injectors. Some one at the dealer should be able to help you with that. Good luck.

The 97/98 ECM was in the bike when I bought it, but it looks like a straight swap.

We swapped a 98 wiring harness/ECM onto a 96 Ultra and it is easy as unplug/plug and go.

Attaching a thread from the past that we actually sound smart when I re-read it.
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/evo-c...injection.html

They make a Cobra system that is a 3 circuit tweaking system that works for the 96' other than that it is a Powercommander and struggles with available maps for the older bikes.

Jamie at Fuel Moto would be a good source to purchase a PC3 from, he will load a map in it for your application, you don't need much fuel added, red injectors would probaly do the same as a tuner for your application. It is my understanding that the SE Stage 2 with red injectors SE3(EV27 clone) has a flash cartrage that only raises the rev limiter some.

Get the OEM ones from the Dealer.
If you want to save a little money you can use Ronnies for an online parts book.
