The heat from the stock exhaust on my 16 RK is bugging me and I found a smoking deal on a de-catted pipe, so I plan in putting it on Saturday.
Any tips or suggestions? I have only had the bike for a few weeks (about 1000 miles) so do i need new clamps? I assume new exhaust gaskets, there are just the three (two at the cylinder, and one for the crossover) is that right? Are stock HD gaskets the way to go? Someone told me to use Permatex Ultra Copper high temp silicone on the crossover gasket to ensure a good seal.
I swapped mine out around 1000 miles and reused the clamps and gaskets. The front bolts on the head are "Fun" to get at and don't really have to be torqued back to the exact settings, just tightened evenly. Make sure everything lines up and start tightening from front to back as everything lines up. After a few runs( heat cycles ) go back and re-check. Be sure to wipe down your heat shields before firing it up so you don't heat up the oils from your hands and stain the shields.....
I agree with Hammerhead ... Port gaskets should be fine... Just check your crossover gasket on your decatted pipe, replace if needed... Clamps should be good ...
You will be reusing flanges and retaining rings,,, make sure they are orientated the right way... (just check how they are on your original pipes)... Right floorboard will need to be removed.... You will need a long 9/16 socket to remove and install mounting bolt under tranny area....
Clean up the exhaust port nuts and threads, (with wd40), also a dab of blue loctite does not hurt...
When installing slipons, smear anti seize to end of header pipe and inside slipons for ease of install, (this will help with removal in the future)...
Before removal of header pipe you will have to disconnect O2 sensors.. Cant mess up install of O2 sensors, as they are colour coded and marked on pipe ... When installing O2 sensors , (before header install), dab anti seize on threads, (dont put any on sensor itself)...
If first time,, take plenty of pics during removal of header pipe... This, and manual should have you up and running in no time .....
Just for kicks,, take a video clip of before and after ...... Good luck .....
The pipes off the head anyway, for the sake of a few bucks start with fresh gaskets at the heads at least. You don't want to do this over again. Stock or SE are fine . Put them in the freezer overnight will help in install.
And don't mix up the o2 cables , remember "black is back" back cylinder.
