OK... So drag pipes are loud, and you loose power.
So reading this I see there are some mods that offer e can do to get a small pick up in your power band. http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/exhaust.htm
Has anyone done this mod and noticed any power gains?
I have drag pipes on my 99 EVO Softail Custom, and I put in a set of Khrome Werks HP Plus baffles. They lower the exhaust note a bit, and are a little quieter, but sound fabulous. They do add some low end torque also. I love the sound. Not so harsh as without them, but they do not quiet them a whole lot.
If you type in Harley with Khrome Works baffles on you-tube you can hear somewhat how they sound. I really like mine. They are around $50 for a pair, but are worth it in my book. Not to hard to install and there are you-tube videos showing how to install.
If you wanna do a "lollypop", go to DKCustoms and talk to them about their Thunder Torque Inserts.
I had a set of Longshots without baffles on my bike and installed Andrews 37 cams. Without baffles of any sort, the bike was unrideable. The TTIs made it work and I am currently using them in my Big Shots Long.
They provide a nice idle, relatively quiet cruise and allow a big bark when you twist your wrist.
For $25, they're worth a look.
Lollipops do work, and I had some home made ones in mine before the baffles. I just like the sound of the baffles way better. They work really well. Of course, I have a carb so can adjust mixture by changing jets. I had to go to bigger jets with the open drag pipes from the start. But lollipops or baffles really help low end torque.
I had tried some of the cheap baffles but they sound horrible. The Khrome Werks baffles are expensive but sound so good. They have a well thought out design that does tone down the noise a bit, but still retains great sound. I believe they could be wrapped with fiberglass and made much quieter. But to me they are just right the way they are.
If you do this mod? Must the bike be re tuned? Since the carb has already been re jetted and intake modified?
With just the TTI's you don't need to re-tune.I ran some in my wifes old Shadow 750,and it ran fine as it was.In fact she even noticed smoother roll on power off idle.Definitely worth the $$$.
