blow by question
hi all, I'm new to this site and have a couple questions. I'll search the forums for my answers but i thought maybe someone might have a quick answer for me on 1,..... How do i ensure that i have adequate crankcase ventilation? my '98 with 34,000 on it seems to be springing some leaks around the rocker boxes ( one is actually puffing a little pressure out of the bad spot in the gasket) and my know it all son thinks it might be a blow by issue... any help appreciated....ED

this is not blow by. the case breathes through the heads, usually into the air cleaner. sounds like you just have a leaky gasket. you have to change it anyway, so you can check the umbrella valves and head passages when you change the gasket. i always change both cyls gaskets, since every time you only do one, the other is sure to start leaking once you get it back together. (murphy's law)
P.S. tell your son that blow by is the combustion gasses leaking past the rings, and has nothing to do with the breathing system, esp since on a harley evo, there is a breather valve that times when the engine is allowed to breathe.
