So I am working on my 2007 Sportster exhaust. The interconnect gaskets are pretty shot, and with all the pipe wiggling to remove the mufflers, I figured I would go ahead and replace the gaskets at the head as well.
My biggest concern, looking at replacements online like this one https://smile.amazon.com/Orange-Cycl...ster+crossover do not look like the ones on there. The ones on my factory pipes seem to have a thin metal cup that holds the gasket. I assumed it was part of the gasket, but now am not sure. Is it?
Reading th service manual they say to remove the retaining clip but do not say what I need to do it with. What type of clip plyers do I need?
I thought this was a one day job but have to wait a week for the parts to arrive, now with Christmas here. I seriouslyvdoubt the local HD dealer is open tomorrow, but will call, but THAT is a 50 mile drive, one way.
There are several types of head gaskets, some flat, some cone-shaped, etc. Just be certain they are spec'd for your year/model .. see here for the various versions https://www.denniskirk.com/exhaust-g...1200c.mmy/1.pg
I use the following pliers as seen in the "How To" https://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/blog/....pTtw0uCy.dpbs I believe I found them at a local automotive parts store? However, if you are just changing the gaskets then I don't see why you would remove the retaining clips as that is generally done when replacing the exhaust or if they are damaged?

Ok thanks for that. Nice install pics, really clearly explained. I will be using the factory pipes, but will get some of those ring pliers for the future.
Gonna call the HD dealer tomorrow and see if they have them and how much. See how bad I need them quick I guess .
Checked the HD dealer, and he has them in stock. About $10 for head to pipe and crossover combined. So I will pick those up tomorrow and get them installed. Will install my Vieds tomorrow too.
Ok picked up two sets of gaskets from HD dealer, one for each pipe. Head and crossover gaskets. Both are slightly tapered. Which way does the taper go? I ask now so I don't have to stop and ask later. Manual does not show that.
