I have an 07 deluxe and just put on 07 rush slip on pipes. I love the sound-no tinnyness but am having occasional decel popping.I called an area bike shop and they want to put on a high flow air box with thunder max ecm for the price of$579. I really don't want to do any other engine modifications. Can I just get away with a remap from the dealer??? What long term problems does decel popping cause???
Here is what was provided me when I had the same situation:
Decel popping is a sign that the bike is running lean, also, it can be caused by loose clamps on the exhaust system. You should probably recheck the nuts at the head and torque as necessary.
Most all of the 06/07 bikes come from the factory running pretty lean. It is not necessary to do the HD download with just slipons, but it would probably cure the popping. I did the HD race download on mine with slipons and it worked fine. However if you do the a/c as well, you are gonna need some device to adjust the ecm properly. SERT, PCIII, something. When I did my stage1 I went with the PCIII and I have been pleased.
From my experience with the same issue, I think you would be fine with the HD download with slipons ONLY.
What temp are you running? Just curious.
Good luck!

An air cleaner AND Thundermax w/ Autotune for $579 bucks?[sm=jawdrop.gif]
JUMP ON IT!!!!!!!You'll be glad you did and consider it money well spent!
Decel popping is not a sign of running lean. It is a sign that too much fuel (rich) is still being introduced during throttle roll off. The extra fuel ignites when it reaches the pipes or muffler. The remedy is to increase the numbers in the "Decel Enleanment" table. This condition is explained at lenght in the race tuner manual.
My '06 Ultra did the same thing with Sampson slipons and the closest HD canned MAP provided with the tuner. Changed these numbers and no more popping.
There's no long term problem with the popping, just sounds like crap.
250 degrees is good, Heat management system doesn't kick in untill 300.
None of the aftermarket ECMs or ECM add-ons allows you to adjust as many parameters as the HD Race Tuner, However the HD tuner cannot be used on any future bikes you buy as it marries an interface to the first bike it's attached to.
what is the "heat management system?" Thanks for the prior info . I'm getting a good bit of conflicting information as to whether decel popping causes damage. It's hard to know what to believe.
The heat management system is programed into the ECM on all EFI bikes. If the temp rises above a given temp the system will start to dump extra fuel thru the injectors to cool the cylinder. If it continues to rise and reaches the next level, the timing will be changed. Further rise in temp will cause the rear cylinder to stop firing. These conditions will only take place at idle.
If you pull up to a light and the bike is rocking and carrying on or you smell a little gas the chance is the engine has reached the limits and these actions are used to lower the temp.
