there are many styles of baffling. a perf tube only changes tone which can help the perceived sound. by adding packing, you can adjust the tone some more. when the exhaust pulse or wave exits the header, some of the wave expands into the dead area between the tube and outer wall and is reflected back into the stream cancelling all 180* out of phase waves. i use to make the church key baffle as was described about and can be adjusted by how many drops there are and positioning of the drop. to help stay reversion, add a twist to the drops.
when i was having issues with my 74ch, i researched race and industrial mufflers and came up with a twisted design. my issue was reversion and not sound, i could not tune both high/low rpm ranges. had one and not the other. this was because my 2" system was too far gone and i had a set of 1.750 long drags.
you can muffle sound waves by change of direction since sound waves like to travel in straight lines. Attachment 611064
