Just fired up new factory H-D 80" evo.Ran about 2-3 minutes at 1000-1500 RPM. idle, wanted to pull timing plug and check timing. The plug blew out when it finished the threads, and blew oil in my eyes that quick.
Well,so much for the timing for now,as I'm letting it cool down.Is it normal to have all that pressure in the crankcase?
Yes, normal. You know, they make a clear plug that you can see through for that very purpose. The pressure you experienced is caused from the pistons on their down stroke. By removing the plug , it was an easier more direct route to vent rather than the normal breather curcuit. Ron
Mack-I don't exactly know the c/r...this is a motor I bought new from an H-D dealer/pre-run at factory....I would think it's mid tohi-7's or 8 (?).
rbabos-yes I'm aware of the plastic plugs. It's just that noone has them around here and I didi'nt think of getting one earlier. However, motor runs good for now during heat cycleing.
I'm new to evo/late model engines w/head breather circuit.I was contemplateing just pulling out the timing plug while running and check the timing like on ole' shovels and pans, and only have splash from flywheels come out---not be blasted by oily vapor.....
