Default SE heads

Need to ask the question about which heads to use on a build. I have a 95"with 034 Head Quarters cam, currently stock heads.I want to bump the compression and decided to either use SE performance heads with the 72 cc or have my stock heads ported and cc'd and decked to 76 cc. I would like to get theccp to200 or close. I think this is about 10-1 with a .030 head gasket. I haveread in otherthreads that valve to piston contact is likely if I use either of these lower cc heads. I talked with thelocal Harley dealer and they assured me that no valve relive work on the piston would be needed if I used the SE performance headswith a bolt in cam, which the 034 is. They said they install these heads every day and never have a problem. I do have a hard time beliving HD would sell something that would not fit it's intended use. Has anyone else used the SE head andhad any issues with valve and piston contact? Thanks for your help.

I'd get my stock heads done up by HQ if I were you. Call them and talk to Doug. Tell him what you're going for and he'll advise you. I got my heads done by Doug at Head Quarters and have HQ-0039G cams (.580 intake lift/.530" exhaust lift), with stock displacement and compression, and didn't need any relief on the pistons. Of course the stock CR is only about 9:1, that's why I say to call Doug at HQ.

I'm getting the 95" done this winter, and am gettting the jugs done by HQ along with a set of matched CP pistons from them. I'll be going with 10:1 compression. I called and talked to Doug and he gave me the part numbers I needed based on the work they'd done for me last year (he looked up the job number) and what I'm going for this winter, so I'm guaranteed to have everything be compatible.

Cheers!

Hehehe... just finishing what I couldn't afford last winter. After the big bore/high comp kit and a GOOD tune, I should be in the 100 hp/100 ft-lbs range (hell, with my carb needing a tune in a BAD way, running 88ci with stock compression into 2 into 2 pipes with Thunder Monsters I'm gettting 83hp/89 ft-lbs!! HQ really knows their sh*t when it comes to cams and head work!!!). Can't wait!!

Cheers!

Harleyhog: Since you want to use Doug's cams in your build, I'd call him and ask him about what you are considering.

Most street port, thin head gasket, shaved head builds are chasing compression without creating air flow (like Doug's heads do) to get more a/f into the combustion chamber and getting rid of the heat. Consequently, many such builds are plagued with detonation from the retained heat self-igniting the unburned combustible gasses.

I applaud your initiative and inventiveness; hope you can, in fact, build a better mousetrap.

The best thing to do is have your OE heads done, you will get better valve guides and a alaround better head job.

You would be best served by going to a popup piston with a 4 cc dome 10 to 1or a 9 cc dome for 10.5 to 1 comp.thatis with theheads at 82ccs, like mine. these are spun dropped and use the SE OE big bore gasket. setting quench at .30 thou.
you will not be disapointed, you can go to the Firestorm cams and realy kick some ***!

For the same money you can get cnc ported heads and a complete integrated kit to fit the kind of power your looking for. Call Art at R&R Cycle and get the low down. www.rrcycles.com

Having your stock heads ported rather than porting the SE or S&S heads means leaving 8 - 12 hp on the table EVERYTIME. If you have the dough, buy the SE Hi-Per heads from Zanotti's and have 'em hand ported.

Maybe if the person doing the work on the stock heads doesn't know what they're doing...

Cheers!
