Default 96 Evo Starts on 1 Cylinder...Why?

Abuddy's 96 Evo starts on 1 cylinder. After about 15-25 seconds the 2nd cylinder lights.. What's going on? Otherwise the bike runs fine once it's warmed up. It's a hard starter when cold, but starts fine when hot. CV40 carb, Cycle Visions Mo Flo A/C, Sampson ripsaws, SE ignition module, fresh plugs, wires and SE coil.. 6k original miles other than some mild carb tuning, motor is completely stock.

Next time you go to start this bike get a couble of boards like a 1x4 or something to cover half of the exhaust pipe opening. Hold the boards tight against the pipe and start it....see if it starts easier and while the boards are still in place if the rear cylinder doesn't fire better. All we are doing is giving the engine some back pressure which the Rip Saws don't have. (I know what your thinking, how am I going to carry boards on my bike....lol....you won't need to if you had good pipes) If the bike responds to this test change the pipes.

If this don't help look at the timing....it's too far retarded.

Understand Doc. Thanks.

The ignition is the SE 8,000 rpm module for '96. Haven't ever messed with the static timing. I understand the back pressure issue though. Ironically, once it's warmed up, it runs like a raped ape. For a stock 80 Evo, it really hustles.

I'll do the experiment blocking off the exhaust just to see if it improves the situation. I know he loves the Ripsaws. The sound is great. I've been trying to get him to update the exhaust. Maybe this is the "substantiation" he needs to make the switch....?? lOl

Thanks..

Well now you just said something that clears up the problem....the 8000 rpm ignition has no business on a stock motor. This ignition system is made for very high compression and for race only. The spark curve is SOOOOO slow coming to full advance that the bike doesn't want to start...plus the full advance is retarded by 12 degrees. I see this alot...people think if they get a race ignition they will get more power...on the contrary...if you don't have the race engine the race ignition actually takes power away. If you guys install the 6200 SE ignition the bike will start better and run better, it will advance the timing at 2000 rpm instead of 4500 rpm of the 8000ign.

Forget the boards change the ignition.....you'll be impressed I promise.

Doc,

I'm familiar with the "letter" code designation the books discuss that correlate to the advance curves a module produces.

At the time, this particular module was the only one the MoCo catalog offered for this '96 Evo. I wasn't crazy about the 8k rev limiter, but the guy is a very non-aggressive rider.

Like I said, ironically, once it starts and warms up, it runs like a bat......." I mean this thing is wicked fast for an otherwise stock 80 inch Evo with a Thunder slide / jetted CV40 carb that I built for it. Ridability and responsiveness is incredible. Mixture is perfect, idles at 1k rpms, wouldn't ripple a glass of water.(It also has the freer flowing K&N type ACand the SampsonRipsaws), but the motor has never been open and it only has 6k mileson the clock.Bone stock... FWIW he never runs anything less than 93-94 tane gas.

Can you personally recommend a HD pn for another SE module that would be better suited to the application?

Appreciate your help and advice.

Thanks, V1

http://www.daytona-twintec.com/model_1006.html I don't see the SE 6200 module in the new SE book but here is a GREAT ignition from Daytona Twintec. I understand you know about the spark curves and all and this ignition has all the bells and whistles from stock settings to full get-r-on power house settings. I highly recommend this Daytona TwinTec ignition. The advance slope has 10 settings, '0' being least agressive, '9' being most agressive and '5' being stock. The same is true with the spark advance, and of course it has a rev limiter setting. I'm sure this will fix the problem you are having.
