I have a FXD with the twin cam motor. I'm looking at installing new cams for more low-end power. I'm installing a vance and hines 2 into 1 exhaust and a mikuni carb. Any suggestions on what cams to use? Anyone had and good or bad experiences with their cam choices? Thanks...
Your question leads to a few. Is your bike fuel injected? Would you convert to gear drive with the modified cams? My personal recommendation is to utilize Harley Davidson's Stage two kit. The warranty is voided otherwise on a new bike.
You are wide open! There are many avenues to upgrade but beware of valve clearances in the mod. Too much lift and/or duration can smack a piston and do much damage to the cam drive - why I asked about gear drive... The chain will destruct and smash things in the timing side, the gears will bend a valve and probably sustain the strain. It's best to avoid any chance of valve/piston collision. There are ways available to you to increase HP and low end torque without modifing the lift or duration of the valve events. Try the 95 CI jugs and pistons first (you'll no doubt want to do it anyhow) and do the upgrades needed to your carburation for that increase. You should see much better torque and about 10 - 15% increase in HP with just bigger bore and rejetting. The engine becomes 'over square' or more bore than stroke - quicker response - big thumps!
If you are looking for low end and mid range increase, I would suggest Andrews 26G cams. You can get bolt ins for the stock chain drive, but ya would still have to break open the cam chest approx. every 20-25000 miles for chain tensioner shoe inspection and replacement, not to mention the special tools required. Or go to Andrews 37G cams with s&s gear drive and wind up with approx 80 hp and 86 lb. tq pending exhaust, ign, and carb jetting. After ya run the ***** off it, then upgrade to 95" and the 37G cams will work well, or upgrade cams again- what ever $ leads ya!
You Know yahmon is right on the cam,the andrews 26 is a very good cam. I wrote a post where I talked to Dewey about this very subject but I guees no one wanted to comment about it at that time. Oh well at least we are talking about it now. Another good cam is also SE 204 cam. These cam's work great for a stock engine and will pull really hard without doing alot of mod's.
