Another 103" Question.....

Default Another 103" Question.....

I am new to the site, hence the name FNG. I recently bought a 2007 'Train that has some engine modifications. It came with a SE 103" with SE 255 cams. From what I've been told, the OEM jugs were bored out, and they added the 103" flat top pistons. Also, it has a DynoJet Power Commander. No headwork was done. I want to have the heads done, and change the cams. Nothing too radical. What about the R&R Stage II heads and Woods TW6-6, or the NEW Wood cam....not sure of the #. Heads are $575, cam is $390. I'm trying to do this on a budget. Do I need new pushrods? Lifters? Bike has 9,300 miles. This is my 1st HD, so please bear with me, while I learn these things. Thanks.

Bob Wood will tell you to put new lifters on a new cam. The pushrods you have will work, but you'll need to pull the gas tank and rocker covers. I went with EZ install pushrods and covers, but will likely switch back when I pull the heads.

I think the R&R heads would be better matched to an R&R cam. However, Hillside or Baisley heads would be setup for Wood cams (if you told them).

I agree that if you are thinking of using R&R heads, talk with R&R and try one of their cams that compliment their heads. Adjustable pushrods make cam swaps easier, but if pulling the heads anyway, you can use the stockers if the cam is ground on the same size base circle and you are not changing rocker angles. The cam manufacturer can tell you if the stockers will work.

Also check with Headquarters as they do exceptional headwork and have cams to match.

I have run three different woods cams, the 5G, 6H and 400-6 and they are all good performers, but in one case the cam did not match up well with the head I was running and it was a bitch to tune. Talk with the manufacturer of the cam you decide on and then also with the person who does your head work to ensure you are using parts that work well together.

I'm not dead set on using the R&R Stage II Head. I'm open to suggestion. I'm trying to do this on a budget of about $1500, and I noticed that their stage II head work was reasonably priced ($575). If I'm paying $390 for a bolt-in cam, $250-$300 for a new dyno tune, and have to buy new lifters and push rods, that doesn't leave much $$ for headwork. If BigBoyz calculators are correct, my current compression ratio is 9.99 to 1. So, I don't think I need the heads to be decked, do I? I believe that the cams I've looked at are most usable from 9.8 to 10.2 to 1. Any other suggestions on head porters who won't break the bank? Thanks again for helping.

the wood 408-44 is the new one...not many results yet but I like the specs...would work well around 10 to 1 compression...I like r&r heads, am running them on my bike

Ok, after researching most of the day today, I think I've come up with a decision. I'm going to leave the stock heads, and swap the SE255 cam for the Wood TW6-6. I'll have it re-tuned, and see what happens. To those who've taken the time to reply, thanks for your input/opinions/expertise. I'll keep you guys informed.

the R&R heads with the 6 cam will be a good running bike..
also the Baisley super street heads for 875.00 will work excellant with the 6 cam. you will also need a tune too so who ever you get the parts from make sure they will supply you with a break in map for the pc3.

I resently took my 08 Fatbob to 103, 255 Cams, oviously a K & N Heavy Breather, altered my Screamin Eagle slip on baffles, Race Tuner and a remap, should be pumping out 100 - 105 HP and around the same torque, just in the process of bustin her all in and I gota say, A very, VERY happy man . Gota find that 109 who P M O a month ago, gonna be hard to see a grown man cry !

RR cycles is right down the road from me, they do EXCELLENT work. But for a basic "budget" CNC port jobs, I prefer NRHS performance. Their "stage 1" (Dont take too much into the term "Stage" either) CNC port job for $550 is probably the BEST BANG for the BUCK you can get and they work exceptionally well with grinds like the Woods TW-6 and Andrews 37g grinds. Stock lifters will be fine, but you should get yourself a good set of ADJUSTABLE pushrods. A good set will run you $100 roughly.

Question 103 build questions

Hello,
Considering a 103 build for my 2007 96 c.i.

Went to my Indy and he advised Baisley heads, and roller rockers with my redshift 575 cam.
I recently did a dyno run at Shumate Harley in Spokane and turned 87 Hp and 92 Trq.

My Indy and Dan Baisley did not recommend bumping compression over the stock 9:2:1 - my question is that I see all lot of 103 builds going with more compression- My indy says the bike will not be a dog if compression not bumped up.

So I am wondering what my numbers might look like... with this coming build.
I know Dan Baisley does great work on heads, and the roller rockers will be an added plus.

Thoughts/ comments please.
