Riding my 1979 80 CID FXE I noticed a bad fuel leak when I parked and shut it off. It was puking gas out on the ground at an alarming rate and it seemed to be coming from directly underneath the engine. I assumed gas was leaking from a fuel line and running down the side of the engine so I checked all the lines I could see. I could not find any wetness on the main line to the petcock or on the cross-over line (split tank) nor could I detect any gas seeping down the sides of the engine. I have not yet crawed under the bike to see what's down there because this just happened and it's still hot.
It dumped about a quart of gas on the ground in the 2 minutes after shut-down and then stopped. When started again it leaked while running and would again stop a couple minutes after the engine was killed.
Anyone have a clue as to what is leaking? I am not the most mechanically inclined person. Thanks for your help.
So the carb malfunctioned and filled the engine with gasoline which leaked out the crankcase? I drove it home meaning I have probably ruined all the bearings and other lubricated parts.
The engine ran fine throughout the experience. Would it do that if the carb was filling the engine with raw gas?
I checked the oil and I see no sign of gas contamination. If gas flooded the crankcase wouldn't the oil tank be contaminated?
Crawled under it as best I could and checked it out as best I could. There was some fresh oil which was no surprise as it does leak but I couldn't find any gas dripping. Figuring the damage was done, I fired it up and it started immediately. It ran great. It sounded fine without a hint of knocking. What's more, no gas leaking. I started it and shut it down several times with no more leaking. Last time I let it run a couple minutes and the engine showed no sign of distress and again, no leaking.
I am baffled. Not sure what to do at this point.
BTW- here's a photo. Come July it will be 30 years since I wheeled it off the dealer's showroom floor for $4,600. They told me it was the first 80 inch model sold in that city. Yes, the bike is full size. It kind of looks small with me standing next to it because I am sort of a big guy.
Does your gas tank vent through the gas cap? If it leaks again (carb overflowing), loosen the gas cap and see if that stops it. If so, a new gas cap is in order.
