Exhaust gaskets

I am going to replace exhaust gaskets, I have a snapping type noise that I think is an exhaust leak. I got two new gaskets and just to make sure I install them right I need to know the way they go into the heads. There is a 1/4 flat on the one side and tapers down to a very thin ring on the other side. Am I right in figuring that the flat 1/4" goes towards the head and the thin taper out towards the pipes. and what is the best way to torque them down.

torque wrench & make sure you use inch lbs, not foot lbs.

Yes the flat side in, be sure and recheck after about 100 miles.

TX I found in the manual that the front pipe 9-18 inch lbs on top bolt first then 60-80 inch lbs on bottom bolt the back to the top bolt 60-80 inch lbs. Then on the rear pipe bottom bolt first 9-18 inch lbs, then the top 60-80 inchs then back to the bottom 60-80 inch lbs
