Hi, I'm new to this forum. I need help. I have a 2007 HD RK Clasic with V & H true duals. I have noticed in the last couple of weeks the exhaust smells really heavy as if it is burning too much fuel, and I am using more fuel than before. In fact, I ran out of gas 3 days ago when I misjudged my reserve gas light warning (The light went on for only 20 or so miles).
I have 24, 000 miles on my bike. I did the 20, 000 mile service and its almost due for 25,000. I have not changed the fuel filter yet. I do have a service manual but I dont have the diagnostic manual that indicates fuel troubleshooting. Before the 20000 mile service I did, I had Harley dealership do EVERYTHING. They installed the V & H pipes.
I need assistance with suggestions on what my problem is. Is it the filter? Some sort of sensor? Can the fuel pak that HD installed go "out of tune"? The installation was when I first bought the bike, less than a 1000 miles in it. Does anyone have or know what the 2007 diagnostic manual says?
Thanks for all your help! I think this is a great web site!
Both the front and rear sensors are there and tight. When I clean and wash the bike around the sensors, I try to take care not to damage them since I know they can get expensive and are delicate.
The dealer installed the pak....I ordered the V & H through the dealership. I m not sure what EFI management device they installed, where is it located so I can look? I looked at the reciept and they did not label it on there....
Thanks for all your replies. After the pipes were installed, 23000 miles ago, I only felt a slight difference. This problem is new, within the last couple of weeks. Tire pressure is fine. I replaced the air filter on the 20000 mile service on Jan 31, 2009.
Does anyone know how do you know if a oxygen sensor went bad? Is is a "replace-the-part-trial-of-error" way of finding out? Or is there some sort of tool/device that can "measure" to see if it is working?

Have you been making frequent short trips some where??? My mph went down to 28mph when I started to ride it to work 1 1/2 mile...had me going, thought something was wrong, turned out to be the frequent short trips...high way about 40...just a thought..
Besides the exhaust “smells really heavy”, have you noticed any change in the way the bike idles, accelerates or how it runs at a constant speed?
It is possible that your fuel management system has lost it’s programming or the programming got corrupted or the connection between the fuel management system and the ECM has changed due to loose wires or corrosion.
I would pull the plugs and see how they look to verify that the bike is running rich. I would also disconnect the fuel management system from the ECM and check the connector pins and make sure they are clean and making a good connection.
Else as previously stated, a change in your riding style will affect your gas mileage. My gas mileage drops a little in the winter months when Oregon uses 10% Ethanol.
