I have a 04 FLHTCUI, fuel injected, its backfiring thru the air cleaner when just lightly on the throttle crusing, it feels like it sputters and misses but not when substansially on the throttle and when I let off its popping thru the tail pipes more than usual. What causes this?
backfire thru carb while running easy and popping thru tailpipe on decel both are usually lean condition. If this just started and the bike had been running fine in the past, suspect possible intake leak. Also, have you changed to lower octane fuel? If so, that could cause symptoms like you describe.
As others have said, sounds lean. I would pull the plugs to see what they look like. They are probably really light colored (a real chalky white) indicating a lean condition. Ideally they should be light tan or a little darker. Check to make sure the ends aren't burnt off.
Are you running any kind of a tuning device (Power Commander, SERT, V&H Fuel Pack) now? What is the rest of your intake/exhaust combination? What are your future goals for engine work? Answering these questions will help you make a decision on a tuning device. It's possible you will see a difference in the conditions of the plugs for the front and rear cylinders. If that is the case, you will probably want to go with a PCIII or SERT. They allow more tuning than a Fuel Pack. Depends on what you have and what you want to do down the road.
