I took the Sparkplugs out of the bike last night to clean and gap 'em. I noticed that they have a black crust on them. Manual says either too lean or too rich, can't remember right now. It's a stock CV. Any suggestions as to how best to fix this problem. I know the shop manual says one thing and other amnuals also cover this, but I'd to find out what some of y'all say also. BTW, I'm rebuilding the carb right now.
Pipes are not discoloured. Bought it used and have only had the bike for about a year and these are the plugs that came with it. '93 FXLR. I am having fuel delivery issues. When I first bought the bike, the only way I could keep it running was to keep the enrichener **** pulled all the way out.
Sound like a lean pilot jet issue, BUT, could be too rich on the main, causing the plugs to be buggered.
What pilot, and what exhaust, and what shape is the air cleaner element in???
Scott
Dry balck crust? If thats the case then it sounds like your too rich. If you have been running with the choke on, then this could cause the problem. Check your air filter. Do both plugs look the same?
Make sure your idle screw is set at around 900 rpm. I like mine at 1000 rpm myself. Then push your choke in and see if it stalls. Could just be that your idle is set too low.
if their crusty, its prolly oil, rich fuel would be a sooty black.dont use HD plugs, their champion and their junk,SE plugs are split fire and their really junk.use autolite
Both plugs were exactly the same. It has been ridden with the choke on. Yes, they are Champions. Idle screw; is that the screw on the side where the Throttle/Idle cables come in? If it is, that screw was never even all the way down to the Throttle/Idle control. I don't know which jet is in it. I assume the one that came with the carb. Pipes are kinda loud, but I don't think they're aftermarket. I could be wrong, though.
Sometimes when you have to pull the enrichener out to keep it running the pilot or what I always called the pilot jet is clogged so when you are rebuilding take a very close look at all the jets. The pilot jet orfice is very very small , that's is why it gets clogged so easy.
