Can try checking your AC and see if looks like there has been any excess oil accumulating .. As long as you can see oil on the stick you have enough pressure and flow .. If your Oil Gallery is working properly ..

The bike originally had the breather hose connected to the backing plate of the air filter, that is the reason you might find oil in the air filter, but my guess is that it is not set up that way any more...
You may find that the breather hose is just run down to the frame to vent overboard.
stop guessing; compression and leak down. If you can't/don't have guages/don't know how, take it to any good independent shop and have it done.
If you are losing from the full mark to the bottom of the stick in 400 miles and you are seeing smoke, the problem is likely internal and filling to the halfway mark and the other fixes probably won't solve the problem. The odometer may not be accurate as well, you really don't know how many miles have been rolled up on that engine. Do the tests, see the results and you will know what you need to do.
Back in the day I would put a 90 degree nylon fitting, I think 3/8, at the end of the vent line and and set it to lay and breath on the drive chain under the engine.
Would make that, chain and sprokets, last a long time.
But the Wife really hated to get oil on her shoulders and pretty white shorts shorts.

I personaly dont have the tools, but between the 20 techs that i have, there are the tools. I will be bringing it to a shop this weekend/week. and see what they have to say about it.
Had a similar problem on an 88 model. Turned out there was nothing wrong with the motor per se, didnt burn any oil at all. Check your primary level. Some of them from that era blow engine oil into the primary. I thought mine was using oil until the first time I changed the fluids, got about 2.5 qts out of the primary. 1990 is a little late for this problem, but so was my 88. Hard to fix, the MC had a recall for awhile where they gave you new cases.
