Exclamation Severe Oil Consumption.

Just picked my bike up from the dealer a few weeks ago.1990 softail. have about 400 miles on the bike since picking it up, checked the oil the other day and it was low ok so now big deal. get the engine warm. add the correct amount, finished. well I check the oil every time I fill up with fuel. checked again the other day and it was low. again. all in all I have went threw 1 quart of oil within the 400 miles I have got on the bike, I know bikes/Engines with High(er) performance engines use some oil (my bike has axtell 30deg pistions, ported heads. Andrews cams. larger carb dyna ignition ) will use some oil but 1 quart every 400 miles is a fricken joke, plugs look good for the most part, I dont drip excessive amounts one or 2 small drips here and there but not enough for a quart. if i am crusing for a while. on the hwy at about 75/80 for a while and crack it there is a little puff of smoke, and i stoped at a place to grab something and when i left and started the bike there was also a little puff of smoke, just wondering if anyone can give me some advise/wisdom/help. it just makes me upset knowing I just got the bike. and the friggen problems.

Sounds "ring" related, as a guide/seal will usually wisp smoke on deccel, rings will do similar under power.

Before go into a panic try running it at 1/2 level between the full and add mark, have done this with many models and no further diagnosis was needed...

Thats what I kind of thought, I dont know the previous history of the bike but the bike itself only has 19k on it so i dont know how much the engine has, and how the previous owner took care of it, any rough est on what to expect for a re-ring of a engine. if that is what it is i just need to know what i have to save up for the time being.

Harley has all kinds of dipsticks availabler for all differend engines. Befor anything else, make sure you have the correct dipstick.

Time for a compression and leak down test; all will be revealed.

I think Jay is on the right track...

The owners manual for your bike will say the tank holds 3 quarts, well, it will if you want to blow 1/2 quart out the breather...

Keep the oil level about 1/2 to 1 inch below the bottom of the filler neck. If you can stick your finger into the oil tank and get some on your finger, you have enough oil. Try it, I think you may find that your engine is ok.

yes because it seems like I allways catch it at the very bottom of the dip stick, I will drive it for a few days and just keep my eye on it.

also while talking oil. would the tappet filter screen perhaps cause ticky valve/engine noise while driving? or am i just hearing things now that i am overly thinking about the low oil?

Can try checking your AC and see if looks like there has been any excess oil accumulating .. As long as you can see oil on the stick you have enough pressure and flow .. If your Oil Gallery is working properly ..
