I have an '03 carbureted Fatboy with 27,000 miles on it. I'm running V & H Bigshot Longs.
Recently, I have been experiencing very noticeble decel popping.
The spark plugs look good.
After searching the forum and reading the other related posts, I am a bit confused as to whether or not I should be overly worried about the popping. Could this just be occurring now because the exhaust has some miles on it?
If you had no popping after rejetting and installing the pipes and intake and it started popping recently, check for exhaust leaks. If there is a leak where the pipes go into the heads, that can couse popping through exhaust.
The problem isn't with the type of carb, it's the jetting. No need to buy a new one. First, as was mentioned above, check for exhaust leaks. You have to install them with new gaskets, torque the nuts at the head, THEN attach the pipes to the mounting brackets. If the brackets don't line up, you must shim, bend, or otherwise modify them to align them to the pipes. If you move the pipes around too much, you'll end up with a leak at the head.
Are there baffles in the pipes? If not, then that's part of your problem. Twincams and EVOs DO NOT run well with open pipes. You will lose a LOT of torque and it will be difficult to tune properly.
Next, did you get it dyno-tuned (by an experienced tuner, which usually means NOT at the stealership) after the changes? If not, then get it done and the popping will go away. Incorrect Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) is the cause of most popping problems.

This was my problem. The end piece on the pipe (that the flange goes over) broke loose causing an air leak. I had to have the piece welded back on. The guy that did the job said that he sees this problem a lot with Vance & Hines. He said the piece is just spot welded on.
