I've now got the break-in miles on my '05 Ultra and am quickly approaching the 1,000 mile service. This is my first Harley - can someone tell me if there is a point at which you can feel the engine really loosen up and start purring? On my BMWs this point normally was at 12-15,000 miles.
Going in for the 1k service soon and will go Mobil 1 V-Twin in all three holes I guess. Seems there is alot of folks in favor of the Mobil 1 vs. the Harley oil.
It will loosen up at 5-8 k miles. One day you will just realize it and be surprised how well it runs.
Don't use the M1, as good as it is in the trans. You need a gear oil in there if you want it to survive. I like redline shockproof heavy but Mobil gear oil is also a good bet, just not the M1 engine oil in the trans.
I agree, don't use the Mobil 1 v-twin in the transmission. If you can't find Redline Shockproof Heavy or Mobil 1 gear oil, Amsoil 75W-90 gear oil is a good substitute.
Took my Ultra in yesterday for the 1000 service .... asked the service manager about synthetics. He said he would not recommend ANY synthetics be used and further commented that when they take in a trade and know that it has synthetic in it they take it out.
Now I'm really confused .... seems there are so many positive comments on this board about synthetics being the real deal.
They are the real deal, temp protection with synthetics range in the 300 degree range before they start to break down , where as the dino oils start at 250. Most twin cams run 230 +- so that doesn't leave much of a margin for stop and go traffic where the oil heats up even more. Call this guy up and ask him this question and let us know IF he knows even this answer.
I'd be willing to bet he rides into work on a horse, find another dealer that is up on modern practices.
Synthetics far surpass the dino oils in a number of ways. GEEZ Where's SKIP when we need him?
Most people that do not use synthetics do so because of cost only, not because they do not work.
Don't use Snythetics is he crazy. Does he walk around with a walker. He really should get in touch with the times. I faught using Synthetics for a long time but when the proof is staring you in the face,ya just got to listen. I just don't use syn3
