When a dyno tune is done what all is tuned? Is it just the fuel/air or do they go into the timing as well? I have a PCIII is that all they tune. Hope this is not a dumb question. Guess what im askin is do they go into the ecm to get everything worked out.
That is a great question and one that many ask, and some don't understand.
A competent tuner will definitely adjust A/F ratio, timing and exhaust if required and this would be done in all throttle positions and load ranges to ensure that you don;t get just peak power, but also rideability and enconomy.
There are far more dyno operators than true tuners that really don't understand the entire concept of how fuel and timing interact, and how each must be correct for a truly well runing engine.
The million dollar question - how do I find a good tuner - ask questions, look for references and find out just how long a tune will take. A really good tune on a basically stock bike can take only a few hours as it is pretty close to begine with, but tuning a built, performance engine can at times take the better part of a day with many pulls being done. There are also many than can tune without a dyno, which is a true art that again requires knowledge and hardware to monitor all aspects while riding. This usually takes much longer but can be done, only thing you dont get is a dyno sheet at the end of the process.
Without some sort of tuning device, it is not possible to adjust timing, fuel, etc. Dealers can download preset tuning maps, but they are a one size fits all and cannot get exacting results required for a really good tune.
A dyno tune lasts longer then an hour.............that's a good indication of what the "tuner" is doing.
The PCIII is a fine tool to use, just find a "tuner" that uses it correctly and does a proper tune with it.
Every throttle position at every RPM needs to be adjusted for fuel and for timing. Only then will you get a good tune with a great runing bike. There are many many "tuners" that only tune at wide open throttle just to get the numbers on paper, but how often do you ride at WOT?
www.bigboyzheadporting.com is who I use and recommend for dyno tuning........he uses a 4-gas analyzer system which gives a much better tune then the regular AFR system.
