Default Which Cam to use?

Hey all,

I have an 09 Street Glide with V&H True Dual Monster Ovals and the SE Heavy Breather with a power commander. I'm going to upgrade to the 103 CI kit and am wondering which cams to go with. I generally run around 2000 to 4000 RPM's and would want the power/torgue to mostly be in that range but not fall flat outside of it. Also, what about porting the heads, yes? no?

Thanks for any input/help.

Andrews 26,CycleRama 575,SE 204s These are my pics.Regards,Tom ps:the SE 255s are popular but close pretty early & increase Cylinder pressure.

Either a Wood 6 or his new 555, and a head that'll move about 270-275 @ 28", cc'd/surfaced for the proper compression.
That'll have great torque in the range you are wanting , BUT, with the ability to push hard, well beyond that when needed.

At what compression are you figuring to be at? If in the 10.0:1 range, there are many cams that will give you nice performance increases. Wood 6, Tman 525, Andrews 37, etc but my preference would be the HeadQuarters 525 or the 575 if you want the performance to come on a little higher in the rpm range. Your riding style will also have a great influence on your perception of how a particular cam is performing, do you want low end, low rpm pulling, flat out wide open power or somewhere in the middle? Figure that out first before buiying anything.

What are you looking for?? Tq? or Hp?? or a combination of both? How much compression do you want to run? What kind of riding you? 2 up? or solo?

All, thanks for the inputs, I continue to learn more and more about cams. Very interesting and complicated subject.

To answer a few questions, I'm looking for mostly power increase, not so much torque, I ride 2 up sometimes, mostly solo.

My compression should be about 9:1 or 9.5:1 with the 103 installed.

I would REALLY prefer not to redo any surfacing and I don't want to race this thing, I just want a solid motor for years to come that will have excellent performance and power.

I'm really looking at the Woods 555's and don't think I'll have to do anything special to install except dyno afterwards to find the sweet spot.

Q: If I port the heads while doing the 103, will I need to do anything else to engine because of this? This is my next topic for massive research.

Really appreciate all the sage advice, keep it comin...

Oh, by the way, anyone use the "True-Trak" stabilizer? Heard really good things for higher speed turning...

Thanks again, rubber down.

If you do decide to pull the trigger on that particular cam, then we'd suggest a 4* advance gear, at that compression ratio.
You'll be glad you did.

same kit going in this winter.Decided on the se 259e,with mcr heads,.03 hg,tappered se push rods (talked out of the perfect "tick" push rods by the dealer). This combo loves some compression and with the cast pistons from the 103 kit and cometics it should be at least >10.5 to 1. Im going to smooth out the throttle body as time permits.

The 259e cam should go well with this combo,Ive read as much as i could and like mid-upper range cams for the way I ride. The se compansator, bigger valves,hc are critical and should complement these cams and vis versa.
