I installed a vance and hines 2 into one and a mikuni carb on my tc88. It runs great but pops like hell when I let off the gas. I thought it might be running lean so I checked the plugs and they are perfect. I can't figure it out.
Popping is normal- Rev it up then downshift before the lights and be proud. People pay good money for that sound.
I bought the vance and hines big radius pipes and they pop too.
Aftermarket pipes do that sometimes. You should of richened the mixture up some becouse the pipes breath better and you need a bigger jet. The pipes directions should of told you that. If the plugs look good you should be fine.
If the plugs look right i guess its not the mixture. I dont know if two in one pipes pop? My pipes are true duels no crossover between pipes and they pop only if you go from 2500 rpm or higher and let off the gas.
What octane level are you pumping in? Mine popped, (pre detonation) and I had the EFI adjusted. I also went to a 94 octane at the same time, and haven't had the problem. Popping can cause serious damage to the pistons, so I would get the carb adjusted or switch fuel.
The popping you are experiencing is called 'decel popping' it is not normal. Decel popping is caused by three things, #1 your idle circuit is too rich letting in too much fuel when the throttle plate is closed, #2 an exhaust leak, #3 an intake leak. Now if it is a rich pop it will sound muffled....if it is a lean pop it will be crisp popping sound. Lean will come from an exh and int leak. A rich pop is too much fuel...adjust the idle circut.
My Python pipes pop but I really like the sound. The harley mechanic told me it they would do that before I even got them.
He said straight drag pipes pop when you let off the throttle. He was right and I haven;t had a bit of trouble and I love the sound. I say enjoy it.
