Default 103 Big Bore kits

Just curious if anyone knows what the difference is between all the stage 1 103 BB kits? Other than cylinder finish and aircleaner isn't a 96 inch 103 BB stage 1 kit all the same? Speaking of Harley Screaming Eagle kits here.

If I can make sense of the kits, it seems like you get several finish choices and some kits have rocker boxes and related gear and some don't. Some also have cams, but that technically is moving towards stage 2.

I'm sure there are some folks who can correct my errors.

You can go with the cheapest kit and reuse your top end gear as long as you are using the 255, W555/6-6 or other cams that are compatible with stock valve train. My local dealer does parts and labor for stage 1 103 for $850.

Hope this helps.

My question was rhetorical; for 2010 there is only one Stage I 103" BB kit. The kit is basically pistons, cylinders, air cleaner upgrade and clutch spring. The different part numbers are for black or silver; '07-'08 softails; '08 dynas; '08 and later touring and '10 European models.

Cams put you in Stage II. Find the kit for you application;that's the PN you need; the kits are all the same; just tailored for particular models.

*lol* That was my question. It appears there is only one Stage 2 103 BB kit also. In my case, I have after market pipes already and a stage 1 aircleaner (SE) as well as a SERT. These are on my 08 Road glide. If I bought a stage II kit for a 07 Softail (EFI 96 motor), all I would be utilizing is the cylinders, pistons and cams (SE 255's). So all that should just bolt right in my engine without any problem as far as I can tell. So as you say, the only real difference in the stage 2 kits is the cylinder finish, pipes and aircleaner style. Please correct me if I am wrong.

It just appears the moco tries to make things more complicated and confusing than they really are. I appreciate all the comments and opinions expressed here. I have learned so much just by reading through posts and reading different opinions on varying subjects. This is one hell of a resource. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge.

Save yourself some money and have your cylinders bored to fit new pistons and by an aftermarket cam, like the Andrews 54H, TMan 555 or Woods TW555; get her tuned and go.

Too late. Paid $400 for SE stage II 103 BB kit. After I sell the aircleaner and pipes my net will be about $250 or $300. Don't think I could even get a good set of aftermarket cams for that price! Will be doing the install myself so no labor costs. I'm ecstatic!

One suggestion, hang on to your old cylinders. New MOCO cylinders are not known for always being round and staying that way, thus djl's suggestion to bore your stock cylinders.

Thanks for the suggestion. Wasn't aware of the quality issues of the MOCO cylinders. I will indeed be keeping the stock cylinders and pistons.

Good luck with that 120R, sure seems like a MONSTER!
