Hi guys been lurking around for a while, first post. Great answers to guestions. I have a 2000 Roadking and need to replace the gasket that goes between the tank and the petcock. The manual says to apply vacum to the vacum line on the petcock to drain the tank. Is there any other way to drain the tank without the vacum pump?
Use brake hose clamps or needle nose vise grips to block off crossover line. Unclamp one side and have a hose ready to put on that drains into your gas can. You will only have to drain 1/2 of tank this way. Be quick when you opo the unclamped side off though.
OR - use 2 needle noses and cut crossover line. Hook another hose with a barb into clamped off crossover and remove needle nose - drain 1/2 tank. This will require replacing crossover line though.
I've pulled a vacuum on the petcock using a turkey baster before, but you have to keep redoing it as it looses suction quickely. A better solution is to use a 50cc or larger surenge. It doesn't take a lot of vacuum to get it to drain.
You can also loosen the nut on the petcock enough to spin it around to get access to the back and take off the cover. Move the spring to the other side of the diaphram and reassemble. Now you will no longer need to pull a vacuum to drain.
