Default Installing SE Lifters Question

Finally getting around to upgrading to the SE Lifters on my 96 Fatboy. Got the adjustable pushrod measurement & procedure figured out. Adjustable pushrods had been installed some 8 years ago when the EV27 cam was installed.

Question is: Do I really need the Special "Lifter Guide Alignment Tool" as stated in the manual?
Or is there a handy substitute I can use.

Gene

You really should get the guide tool, It's fool proof and not costly at all. It will assure you the proper alignment and oil feed for proper engine longivity.

EVO Tappet Block Alignment Pins (requires 2 of these) Used For Both Evo and Twin Cam
The pins are used to re-align your oil pump after installing your twin cam. The oil pump has four bolts that connect it to the cam plate. You put a pin in two opposite corners and the bolts in the other two corners. After torquing the bolts and pins (the pins force the pump to 'center' itself on the cam plate) you remove the two pins and replace them with the original remaining two bolts and torque the last two bolts like the first.
Late 77-up Harley-Davidson Big Twin tappet blocks, including Evolution, do not have counter-bored bolt holes; therefore, when a tappet block is removed (or even just loosened) it should be reinstalled using an alignment tool to ensure that the lifters track properly on the camshaft
This tool makes the process quick and easy, ensuring the durability of your installation
