Default Cam install question

I am just beginning my tw-555 cam install on 2012 RKC and as I usually do, begin overthinking it all. I have seen the FM, S&S and other late twin cam replacements and they never remove the oil pump from the cam plate. I was not planning on it either, so my question is do I need to perform any "alignment" procedure for the oil pump. I would think since I'm leaving it bolted to the cam plate, i wouln't need to. The video's show no alignment either. What say the all knowing masses?

Don't touch it. Remove the cam plate, install your new cams and put it back together. My best advise is to spend the money and buy (or borrow) the right tool to remove the old inner cam bearing and install the new one. Good luck! It's really quite simple if you have any wrenching knowledge at all.

Thanks. Got the bearing remover and installer tools am I'm a pretty good wrench. I'm not intimidated by too much as long as I can buy the tools and parts I need. Still cheaper than having someone else do it and you know it was done correctly.

Plan on selling the tools when you are done? I'm going with tw-222's this winter.

One more piece of advice. Buy the factory repair manual. It has the proper torque numbers and some of them are much less than you might think. You will need two torque wrenches. One for the inch/pound stuff and one for the ft/pound stuff.

Yea I have all the tools and the manual. That's a necessity as you well know.

Fullautomike: probably will sell them. I'll pm you when I'm done. They are the heartland tools. Not break the bank and they look like they are well made.

I have had my cams out and in twice without removing the oil pump and no issues. The Heartland tool does the job great and the price is good. Some people swear by the "other" tool where you have to tap the new bearings in but that technique didn't appeal to me.

Sounds good. I've never done them either, but I'm in Oxford, so if you want a helper, or a second hand I'd be willing to stop over. Anyway, thanks

So those Hartland tools look good? I was wondering about them. I also want to press the bearings in, not tap them.

I didn't remove, or align, my oil pump. After the cam swap I noticed a new noise, almost a knock, that made me nervous. Pulled everything to double check my work, did the oil pump alignment the second time in. Still had the noise. Turned out to be exhaust reversion noise that is caused by the cam overlap and is normal. Oh well, got to practice everything twice!
