I'm thinking of getting a 2012 fb and I'm wondering if just changing the cams and doing the stage 1 would be almost just as good as getting the 103 se kit on my 96"....as far as hp and tq numbers go would there be much difference?

The 96" engine can certainly be brought to a level of power that raise your eyebrows, but you will probably need a piston, if heading in that direction.
That said, you may as well bore to a 107", and with a good set of heads, and the proper cam choice, you run circles around the 103"s as well as the CVO 110"s.
