What is the difference between 18404-08/$164.95, and 17997-99A/$146.95? I see one is tapered. Is that all and if so is there anything inferior about the cheaper version for a mild engine?
The point of the taper is so they run quieter. As in less rubbing on the pushrod tubes. I think that most pushrods do the exact same thing and pretty much similar in quality. Just be sure to get the features you want. Adjustable? Ez install? perfect fit? tapered?
I have the 18404 SE tapered/adj/quick install type. Before that I had the S&S adj. ones. FWIW I think the S&S were easier to work with, but I wanted the tapered and quick install features. I think in general that the SE pushrods are the best value. Especially for a mild engine.
Just mind the fact that some may or may not come with the new push rod tubes and o rings. Which to me effects the value. And I don't think that all push rod tubes work well with all push rods. If I was running S&S pushrods I'd use the S&S tubes. That's just me though. Hope that helps.

In the SE catalog, the 18404 PN shows that new o-rings are included as well as the pushrods, tubes and clips. The 17997 PN shows pushrods, tubes and clips but no o-rings.
There were some problems with the adjustor nuts; poor quality, porous and brittle. Some broke while tightening, some hairline cracked and came loose later; happened to me twice. I still use them but have replaced the adjustor nuts with some machined G8 nuts. From what I read, those problems have been resolved but, being once burned, I won't use those pushrods again without replacing the nuts. The pushrods are good hardware and easy to work with.
Either will work for your application; your choice.
