Default Stage 1 questions

So I am looking to buy a Road King. I have not been on a bike in 20 years. If I was to upgrade to a stage 1 ( pipes, filter) set up do I have to have the bike dynoed?? I ask for the new bikes come with O2 sensors and electrical controlers, so won"t it calibrate the air/fuel mix?? Or am I thinking to much like a car??

A stage 1 upgrade consists of a exaust, intake, and tune. You got to have the bike tuned for the new exaust and intake or it is going to run like ****. Your stock exaust and intake are going to have different characteristics that the bike is programed for. The tune sets your bike up for the upgraded intake and exaust that are going to preform differently. There are many different tuners out there from a custom tune on a dyno to a plug in map with a auto tune such as a power commander.

The O2 sensors and ECM will adjust enough for just an air filter change or just an exhaust change but if doing both, you really need to tune also. HD does have a Stage 1 download that will get you close but to get it just right, it really should be tuned.

You didn't mention what year bike you are interested in and whether 96" or if a new bike, 103". The 103's are just right for a mild cam swap also and it will really wake the engine up as the 103's are already at 9.6:1 CR. If doing just the stage one you still may want to consider adding a tuner such as TTS MasterTune or Screaming Eagle Super Tuner as this will definitely be needed if you go beyond Stage 1.

.......................and those 103" sitting at 9.6 cr, are in the catbird seat for the install of a set of Andrews 26's.
