I've done some searches, but most of the backfire/popping info I was able to find was related to fuel injection...
I've got a 93 FXSTS, I just put in an EV27 cam, screaming eagle ignition, and AN Big sucker air cleaner. It's been cold here, but I took it out for about 45 minutes yesterday to make sure I got everything back together ok.
Seems to pull strong all the way up through the gears, but I'm getting a lot of backfiring when I let off the throttle and decelerate. I tried the full throttle roll-off test described on nightrider.com, but wasn't really able to tell much. The few times I tried, rolling off the throttle quickly didn't seem to accelerate or decelerate (which would indicate running lean I believe). One time I tried, when I opened the throttle wide open in 5th gear, it seemed to bog down a little, but it didn't happen again.
Any suggestions? With significant backfiring on decel, am I off on the carb settings, or should I look at adjusting the timing with the new cam?
Popping on decel can very well be a lean condition. You may need a larger low speed jet. It could also be caused by an intake leak, so before you take the carp apart to rejet, check for intake leaks.
