I have a 2002 Road King 2200 miles bought new in 2002.While servicing my bike I decided to look in to the front brake running out on me. I took off the cover on the master cyclender and notice alluminam shavings mixed in with the dot 5.Can some one help me with what to do. And could this be most of my problem with the front brake.
I take it that you have no brakes/ pressure when you pull the lever? Does the lever pull all the way in to the handlebar? Have you done any other work on the front brakes lately? If you have shavings in your master cylinder there could be some orfices plugged, a piston stuck, a seal damaged, at the master cylinder or at the front calipers or both. Give a few more details and we'll go from there.
Yes the brake lever pulls just about to the grip. I try to bleed the system figuring their might be air but same problem with the lever. That is when I notice the shavings. Also the front pads are in very good shape.
I would strongly suggest that if you are not completely familiar with brake systems to have a mechanic take a look at it for your own safety.
It would involve a disassembly and inspection of the master cylinder to determine the problem and the associated repair/replacement of said parts. Your system should also be reverse flushed or disassembled and thoroughly cleaned and re assembled, bled and inspected for proper operation.
Remember the life you save could be yours! or even mine!
Good advice from Bill, it sounds like unless you do have some air in the system, it is going to have to be taken apart and inspected, cleaned and some parts replaced. I wouldn't ride that bike with no front brake, it needs to be fixed ASAP. Good luck and let us know what the outcome is.
Shavings mean you should remove the calibers. Take them apart and remove the pistons. Clean them good and inspect them for gauling or scratches. The pistons should have a smooth surface and the caliber should have as well.
If not replace the parts.
If it was me I would rebuild the master cylinder or replace it. At least remove it and take it apart. Blow it out with high pressure air. Do this part outside.
