Default Using a pre-throttle by wire handlebar on a TBW bike

Has anyone used the specs identified by the good folks at Flanders? Go to the bottom of this webpage http://www.sideroadcycles.com/Americ...tock_Bars.html to see the cutting requirements to fit a throttle by wire setup on a pre-2005 or aftermarket handlebar. My buddy has offered me his 2008 Heritage bars and I need to cut them for the TBW, I was just wondering if anyone has done it already and how difficult it was. Does the TBW unit simply come out of the bars once the handlebar is removed?

if your any good at a cutting wheel it would be pretty simple.. might need a dremel to get the corners.. i used a new set of tbw bars on my 01.. it is just 4 notches cut in the end, like a castle nut.. i bought my bars off ebay new takeoffs for $20

Yes it is fairly easy to do with the proper tools. I installed a set of Flanders bars on my TBW 08 ultra classic using the above diagram on the flanders website. I used a cutoff disc in a 4" angle grinder to cut the notches and then finished them with a flat file. You also need to cut a fairly large hole in the center of the bars for the wires to exit. I drew my oval shaped hole and used a drill and made 4 holes to form the corners of the oval and then used a dremel tool to finish shaping the hole. The throttle sensor pulls out of the end of the bars and you will see a green conector and that with a small screwdriver pulls apart and then you canfish the wire out thru the center of the bars.

Hope this helps
Tim

Default Thanks for the info

J1mmy / Tim, thanks for the info. With the endless rain that we are experiencing here in South Texas, I might tackle the bars this weekend. I figured that it looked straight forward, just didn't know if the TBW pulled out of the bar or if it was attached somehow. I intend to push the TBW into the Heritage bar and use the locating tabs to mark my cut lines. I have the cutoff wheels, drill, and dremel so this shouldn't be much more than just doing it. I am also mature (read old) enough to be patient with this sort of stuff. I am excited to change the bars though, I love the grip position of the RK bars, but they are too far forward by "just that much".

Thanks again,
Ron
