Default speedometer cable removal

i have a 1993 FXDWG and the speedometer cable broke right at the wheel. my question is how do i get the small piece of the inner cable that broke off inside the drive unit? there wasn't a piece sticking out. do i have to take the wheel off to remove the drive unit or is there some kind of trick? i tried a magnet but nothing came out...... help?!!?

I'm undergoing the same right now. I see no responses. did you ever fish it out?..... I tried the magnet thing too, but to no avail. I'm about to strap it back together, plug the connection to the odometer and ride arouind the block, and hope like everthing else....it'll vibrate loose/out.

well, it broke for a reason.
you might try using a small drill bit using reverse rotation of the cable to see if it will loosen it up, the intent is not to drill it out! the square drive is probably wedged being it probably has rounded off with miles of use.
