need some advice...
speedometer and odometer do not move,
however the "unit" is ok, as a drill inserted into the back makes both move.
.
so it has to be either the cable or the sending unit on the front axel.
.
per the picture , it does not appear that i can remove the cable at the wheel. this seems odd, and the parts book shows that the cable screw on at both ends....however mine does not.
.
so,,
can i just replace this type of cable or will I need to replace the entire unit.
which i guess means taking the front wheel off?
.
as always, just need a bit of direction and a push.
thanks,
marion..
..
hmm,, just gotta figure out how to attach a picture?
That unit is a press fit. Grab it with some vise grips and tap it straight out with a hammer. Don't twist it as it is coming out because it has ribs on it. When you get it out, you can then pull out the gear. Spin the cable with your fingers and at the same time watch your speedo. If the speedo moves when you spin the cable, its the unit on the front wheel.
AlCherry,,
it worked,,, came right out (well almost)..
.
put a drill on the end of the gear and the cable at the other end did not move...
.
cable first,, then we shall see...
.
thanks for the help!
marion..
Marion, You should be able to raise the front end off the ground, spin the wheel and see the gear in the housing spin. When you figure it out and put the unit back together, use a little silicone adhesive on that collar and tap it back in place. Sometimes they want to work themselves back out.
local HD folks don't have one of those cables, and they say they are discontinued..hmmm...
.
I'm kinda new at this, and never had one of these beasts off the ground.
can you guide me down that road too,,
.
I'd like to get a good jack, all i have around here is an old sears hydrolic (the kind ya used to see at the garage, but its a small one), and then a really old sizzor...
I've seen motorcycle jacks, but again, have no experience. suggestions/recommendation on a jack,,, and then maybe even the do's and don'ts about getting them off the ground would be a huge help!
There are alot of MC jacks out there. I have one from WalMart. Bought it ten years ago. Harbor Freight has them. Just Google it and make your choice. When you start to lift the bike, just check it as you are going up. After a few times, you'll get the hang of it. Just check it.
