Default Speedo... rebuild, replace?

I have an '86 FXR, and it has speedo issues. I'm just getting the engine going again, so memory is foggy because I also have a 69 K10 Chevy with speedo issues. One quits working when it gets hot, and the other doesn't work when it is cold.

So, back to the bike. The speedo has lasted for over 49k miles. I'd love to fix the original speedo (I nerd out on wrenching on things... that's my trade). Is it worth it to fix the original unit? I really can't find anything online about how to do it, or should I just get a new one? First thing I did was change the cable, and check the sending unit for stripped gears. All good, so I know it's the speedo internals.

Anyone knowledgeable on this that could help out, or should I just give up on it and buy a new one? I really don't like throwing away stuff that can be fixed. I absolutely hate planned obsolescence.

I say keep the original. There are a few shops that do a great job repairing speedometers. John Bordas is one, and if you search this forum you'll get other recommendations. People have done their own, but getting the chrome ring off and back on without damage is tricky, and probably needs special tooling.

When my speedo stopped working, I went on Ebay, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace to find another one with similar mileage. Found one at a swap meet for a Sportster that was damn close and picked it up for 10 bucks. Still working. I also took a pic of the old one and new one together if a problem of actual mileage came up.
